Coral Identification

Hi everyone! I have a size 14 BioCube that is slowly becoming a reef tank (mushrooms, star polyps, Xenia, that sort of thing) and I recently went to get some more drags from my LFS. I was told that the purple coral in the picture below was a encrusting montipora, but I have a red encrusting coral in my tank which is doing quite well which I was also told is an encrusting montipora. The red has extending polyps, while the purple does not. If anyone knows what they are then please tell me, thank you!!!

The purple one might be a Porites instead of a Montipora.

So the red one is a montipora? And would the porites care be significantly different from montipora?

The red one looks like a Montipora IMO. Possibly Capricornis, but there are a lot of different types of Montiporas though. Capricornis, Undata, Digitata, Spongodes etc. There's a lot of different types of Porites as well. While they may look similar in appearance, they're totally different corals altogether. That purple one may be a Montipora, but a Porites just came to mind first.
Maybe somebody else with more experience with these types of corals will chime in here soon.

Porites solida? The color might not be there, but the skeleton sure does looks similar.

The skeleton is definitely similar, what I just don't understand is why this hard to identify (hard to find???) coral was in the frag tank at my LFS... I'll try and ask someone more knowledgable when I go back.

Yeah, sometimes things like this just happen. I usually go to the same fish stores each week and everything is pretty identifiable, but every now & then they'll get an odd ball in and I'll have to hit the books.
