Stocking suggestions

Hi everyone,

I finally have my tank cycled (after the lfs had me guessing) I used my own test kit, it has been around 2 months and I added a clean up crew and everything seems to be going well. Some nasarrius, turbo, ceriths.

So I am trying to figure out what I can do with my tank it is a 80gallon rimless with 20gallon sump.

I enjoy wrasses but afraid they will jump. I posted on the intended fish purchases and was told any sort of anthias, tang, or trigger wouldnt work. So what kind of route should I go? I do not enjoy clowns as every pair I have had become bullies and bite me. I do not mind chromis other than the disease they can have. I guess a pygmy angel could work (coral beauty/rusty).

It is a fowlr so any suggestions would be great!

If your tank has cycled, I don't see why you couldn't have a tang or 2.

its 48" long, 24" width, and 16" high. I dont know if the length is enough based on the tang guide on RC. I assume its just not enough swimming room.

I have had them before in a tank that size and they did well. You might try pajama cardinals, They do well and are peaceful. I have 2 in my big tank and they are doing great.

Have you considered a blenny? I have a starry one and it is an awesome addition.
I also have clowns, chromis and pajama cardinals...they all get along great.

I agree. Starry Blennys are cool. Yellow tang, kole tang or tomini tangs are all good choices. I wouldn't put a naso or hippo in there. Anthias are cool but you need to have 3-4 of them. I have had chromis in every tank I've ever had. I had 7 in my 75 gallon. Gobies are really good choices too but you will want a top of some sort as most are jumpers.

Yeah I was staying away from gobies and blennies unless I put a top on. Hm I guess I can try some chromis and work my way to cardinals and such. Thanks for the advice

Maybe I will get a screen mesh to retrofit over the top to prevent jumpers. Then I could look at goby/blennie/wrasses or other jumpers haha.

Any ideas on a pygmy angel other than what I listed that could work?

Gobies, basslets, dartfish, wrasses, etc. There are just so many to choose from. There are some really nice dwarf angels and small butterflyfish as well. Bicolors and flames are nice. Check out the Multicolor Angelfish, a real beauty.

Ideally, at least to my eyes, a nicely stocked tank has different types of fish that inhabit different areas of the tank. If you can manage to include some that are bottom dwelling, some that swim low to middle in the water and some that stay out in the open near the top, the tank will look more 'diverse', for lack of a better word.

A screen would be a good thing to have. Many types of fish jump and it would suck to find your first fish dried out on the floor when you get home from work.

Good luck with whatever you decide to go with.

Yeah I need to run to the fish store and even see what options there are (pretty limited). The tank is only 16" high so I can't have too many open water fish, but I think if there is a nice blenny or goby that would be a good start. Maybe after I will check out that angel you mentioned. I will post some pics of the tank tonight!

No matter what fish you decide to get, you will want to have screen tops on the tank. I think I have had almost EVERY breed of fish jump out of a tank at some point. ALL FISH CAN AND WILL JUMP.

That being said, I agree that a nice yellow tang would do just fine in your tank. Since it is a FOWLR system, you might also look at getting a Flame Angel, they are one of my favorites and are readily available. I also think that a small group of Lyretail Anthias would do just fine in your tank. You would want no fewer than 1 male and 3 females, though all females would be just fine as well. I say Lyretail because, IME, they will eat pretty much anything and are the easiest of the anthias to keep.

Hi South,

Thanks for that, I think its all the more I must retrofit a top over the tank. I may end up buying online..although I have never done that before because there isnt the greatest selection I havent seen a flame in 3 months I have been here.

If you order online, make sure it is from a reputable vendor. I would recommend Liveaquaria.com, especially the divers den section.
