RO Membrane

My RO membrane is approximately 6 years old. Should I consider changing it out for a new one? It's the original membrane that came on my BRS 4 stage economy RODI filter.

The pretty inexpensive, after 6 years I would think of putting in a new one.

Rather than time or gallons, I go by TDS post membrane.

If TDS = 0 I wouldn't. Just me.

But if you don't know - get another one.

I would change it but as long as your rejection rate is still good no need to rush. Ive had great luck with the maxro ro membrane from buckeyehydro, brings my tap water of 435ppm down to 4ppm before di.

Leave it alone of TDS is 0.

I changed one once because of age. It wasn't needed.

My current membrane 75gpd is over 10 years old and still producing 0 tds.

These membranes are not a filter that loads up. If used properly the waste is flushed out the overflow.

It goes by your water quality, and usage over how many years. I'm lucky to have 17 tds incoming, so I can get away with decades. Moat are not that lucky.

As stated above, post membrane if you have 0 smile and keep using it.

Almost never will you have 0 ppm TDS water coming out of a RO membrane. emember that membranes reject (don't allow to pass through to the purified water) a certain percentage of the TDS in the feedwater. Nearly all RO membranes used in this hobby reject more than 90%. Some, like our MAXR membranes like Shifty mentioned above, reject more than 98%.

When membranes go bad you'll see one or both of the following signs:
1. Pure water production is slower than it should be given your water pressure and your water temperature (use our calculator - link on our homepage)
2. Rejection rate is not as high as it should be.

I have set my standard to replace the RO membrane when my TDS reads 10 before the DI resin. It currently reads 4 when ran for about 5 minutes.

I would suggest getting a Dual TDS meter so you can monitor the membrane output TDS and final water output TDs. Then you can make an informed decision on your systems performance.

Having very clean water helps. Its hard for me not to have 0 with 17 TDS coming out of the tap.

About to order the water saving kit from you.

DON'T order a water saving piggy back kit!

If all you're trying to do is reduce the amount of waste water, buy a different flow restrictor for $4 instead!
