Replacing loud Mag - drive 5 Water Pump (500gph)
Hi,
I'd like to replace my Mag 5 pump with another one more silent. I tried adding rubber feet underneath it but it still doesn't cut the sound that much. I find it annoying especially at night when sleeping. The buzzing noise wakes me up and I'm afraid the tenant below will complain about it eventually since noise travels fast with wood. The pump has just been setup and hooked to my Aqua C EV-120 skimmer with a 3 feet vinyl tube. What silent pump could replace it and with the same flow? Thanks |

or check out a sicce syncra silent, lots of people rave about how incredibly quiet they are. I'm going to be buying one for my tank once its at that point. Probably a 2.0 (569 gph) would be best for what you need.

I also vote for the Eheim 1260, tried and true. I have to say however that the Sicce pump on my skimmer is dead quiet.

Having owned a few 1260 and 1262 they are great pumps.
Im still liking my china DC pump over all though. I have the jebao dc1200. Have had zero issues!

Or for a few dollars more you can get new technology that gives you much for options and room for growth.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I will go with the 2.0 Sicce pump. I watched a video on youtube comparing the noise between the Mag 5 and the 2.0 Sicce and it was pretty obvious the Sicce was the winner. What a waste of $$ though...I should have made further research on this instead of reading what AquaC suggested in their instructions.

Dang, that is more money than a DC pump. Why no DC love?

Yoki32 if you have a watt meter I would check the wattage. The specs say 35 watts, but the amperage draw says .65 amps, which x 120v = 78 watts? Plenty of people love them, so I guess they are good pumps. Seedless One come back in five years and tell us your DC3000 is working great and I will buy one. My friend had one and it rusted in 9 months, which I didn't think they had any exposed metal to rust? I do like your avatar. Yoki32 I have my Aqua C Urchin skimmer since 2003 and it is on its second pump and still works great.

Have you taken it apart yet and checked the impeller and the housing it rides in for debris or tank critters? I've seen snails and bristle stars get caught up in them. I would do this first and clean it up really good then try it again before you buy another one. Or at least have the old one ready to go if a backup is needed.

I have the same skimmer and the same pump to run it, that pump is very loud and I replaced it with Hydor Seltz L40, 740gph pump and it's a day and night difference.

Well I finally bought a Sicce 2.0 Silent water pump and it made a really BIG difference noise wise. I only hear the Aqua C EV-120 skimmer bubbling now. I've also noticed a difference in amperage via my Apex. It consumes less electricity than the Magnum and I also noted a temperature drop in my system by +-0.3 degrees F.
Real happy now |
