Can a diatom filter, filter an algae bloom?

Trying to narrow down cause of cloudy water. I suspected it was my fine sand stirring around because of my diamond goby. I ordered a diatom filter. I now think it could be an algae bloom due to a phyto overdose. Would a diatom filter cure a bloom?

Won't cure the bloom, but it will clear the tank up quick. If the underlying cause isn't addressed the bloom will just come back though.
