How loud are you overflow boxs
OMG this thing is ridiculous. My overflow is so loud. I have a single one inch drain on a eshopps overflow. The overflow seems well built, what it seems is the water level in the drain box is always right at the bottom. It's as if the drain is way ahead of my pump. It's a Rio 2100 600gph on a 5/8th line 3ft. Head. Are they always like this? Is there something I'm doing wrong?. I can't imagine anyone would ever use these if this is how they sound. It's like a kid sucking the last sip of milk through a straw from a ten gallon jug!

Do you have a valve on your return line? Installing a ball valve, or better yet a gate valve, will give you precise control of the flow into the sump. However, without an emergency drain, I would hesitate in restricting that line.

single durso won't ever be really quiet, but if it's getting too much flow (though I doubt it is, a rio 2100 at 600gph is with 0 head, you're probably flowing ~200gph at 3' head with plumbing) it'll approach siphon then flush and back off.
Can you make it a herbie?

Yes I have the prefilter. Yes I have a ball valve on my return. I understand about the pump not really pumping as much at 3 feet. One thing that may play a factor would be my box is not 100% level.

Idk if there's room in an eshopps for a herbie to not vortex. There are mods though, people put little stockmans or hofer gurgle busters I think. Just keep googling eshopps silencers and trying diff ones, they are easy to put together from cheap PVC.
I wouldn't ever restrict a single drain.

With the eshopps overflow it came with a small piece of pvc. I want to make sure I did this right by glueing it to the bulkhead on top.

Mine are silent, but I designed them myself. I didnt want a big overflow box. I have 2x 1" drains both limited to a perfect siphon and my return is a 1" DC pump. These are almost (except for maybe a tiny baby) proof. I've had turbos on them, blue star on them and nothing was off. They stick out of the surface so they will skim the stuff on top of the water.

I don't remember. I don't remember anything being glued to the bulkhead though. I already had a hose from another box that I bought used that didn't work. That hose didn't fit quite right on the Eshopps so I bought a piece of PVC that match and glued it on.

yes the piece of pvc that came with it slips inside the bulkhead and then the hose that came with it slips over top of that

I did a DIY silencer that i got the idea from this video.
https://youtu.be/m53EHw9gbMo Works great. I had to put 2 extra holes on the top of the cap to make it even more quiet. I played with this design and finally came up with this. In my case i didnt need the valve on the airline (or the airline itself) super quiet. Been running with this since just about day one on this tank when i set it up in March. Im not sure if you have an over flow like mine or not i just skimmed through the posts. ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by Fish Keeper82; 12/30/2015 at 07:36 PM. |
