Sump space for equipment

When designing a sump... How much "space" do you leave for your equipment? Is it a tight fit with less than an inch to spare or do you leave it nice and spacious

Generally depends on the stand size, how much room you've got. I used to have a 100g rubbermaid horse trough as a sump, had all kinds of room. These days, with a 24" cube, it's kind of tight. More room is better... to a point, anyway. Figure out what equipment you will need, and go from there. My little system has an 8x12" skimmer compartment. It's just enough for a skimmer, powerhead and return for an external reactor, and heater.

I always build the biggest sump I can for the space I have and leave a few inches in every dimension over the equipment I plan to use.
