Kill-A-Watt? I need your help

I was wondering if someone had one and could do me a favor and hook up your refrigerator up to it and then put it to KWH. I am trying to figure out if my fridge is out of whack. Thanks in advance

I have a Kill-A-Watt meter but not sure what your question is. Since your frig cycles off/on, best to let it run for a day or more to get a good measure of KWH usage. You'll want to set it to "watts" for a measure of power usage at any point in time.

Every time I look at my Kill-A-Watt on my fridge it reads either 118 watts or over 200 so I thinks my fridge is costing too much to run.

So I am trying to figure out if my fridge is costing too much to run and it is time to get another fridge.

By running two separate KAW's I can get a ball park figure if my fridge is normal or not.

SO if someone has one they could hook their KAW to their fridge and can as well then say do it for one hour and compare figures.

In Ca my elec bills runs about 250 a month for a small house no pool.My neighbors no tank about 70. Thanks in advance

Let the K-A-W run for 24hrs in KWH mode then multiply this by your $/KWH rate to get the cost per day. If the $/KWH is not listed on your e-bill, approx by dividing your monthly bill by your total KWH for the month.

Since wattage will change based on your frig's compressor operation, best to run for 24hrs in KWH mode to see what your energy consumption is.

I am on a tier system, they make it hard to figure out but I am on about 33 cents a KWH, Not really trying to figure how much it is costing but rather how much elec, it i consuming.

Ouch! That's a pretty steep electric rate!

Do you have electric heat? That may be your biggest consumer depending on your temps.

No elec heat, we have natural gas and elec. I do have a 120 gallon tank, I run my dual 250 MH for about 2 1/2 hours a day and then 4 t-5's for about 6 hours,

I am hoping to get a comparison from somebody who also has a KAW, we can both run them for 24 hours and see how much both units use.

I keep my killawatt meter on my aquarium. It runs about $20 a month. You can save a lot on changing all your light bulbs to led.

Even if your fridge is terribly inefficient the cost of a new efficient fridge would probably be close to 8-10 years for you too break even. Still doesn't help with your question however...sorry.

As a baseline, assuming your frig runs an average 200W, 24 hrs/day for 30 days you're looking at 144 KWH or less than $50/month @ $0.33/KWH.

Again, you'll need to hook up the K-A-W and measure the KWH consumption over 24hrs to get an reasonable estimate of energy consumption. Since the compressor should be cycling, the instantaneous wattage doesn't tell you much. If it's not cycling, inspect your coils for dust accumulation.

My fridge is running at 146 kwh for a 24 hour period. Thanks everyone. I would still be interested if someone could the same experiment.

Ahhh, do you mean 14.6 KWH or extrapolated out to 30 days would be 146 KWH? Using 146 KWH over 24 hrs isn't possible on a standard 20A circuit.

If 14.6 KWH, I'd say yes it is definitely time to replace your frig. That's $145/month at $0.33/KWH.

I'd estimate my frig uses less than 5 KWH/day.

I apologize I was away from home on business, I got the numbers from my wife. So my numbers are off. It reads 5.24 now. So I guess I cannot blame the fridge. Looks like Leds probably will be in my future. I will post the numbers at 6:30 that should be 96 hours from the initial test.

The KAW is reading 5.63 KWH after 96 hours so I guess it is normal. Thanks again everyone.
