Skimmer neck extensions

How much do neck extensions really increase a skimmer's capabilities?

I have a Super Reef Octo 1000int with an extension and it did really well when a 40B was my display, but it only handles up to maybe a 75 gallon system in its native configuration (my 40B was a part of around 65 gallons in the system). With an extension, I'm curious as to how much that goes up.

I picked up a 3000 to handle a new, bigger system but it doesn't have an extension - I'm debating getting one. Planning to re-boot my bare-bottom SPS system and picking up all the crud is of course a big part of that.
