Cycling question
Is it OK to start the tank cycle in a 40 breeder with only 20 gallons of water in the tank? Or does it need to be full

What is the reason you want to do it half full? You need at least enough water to cover the live rock, I just don't see any point in not filling the tank all the way.

I wouldn't think it's a problem as long as your rocks are covered with plenty of water. Don't forget to top off with RODI water daily. I would also have a power head for circulation and a heater to keep it at about 78-80.
