Filtration for 90g RR?

Hello Everyone,

So I'm setting up my first filtration system with a reef-ready tank, I am pretty lost on what it is I should use underneath the tank. Just a protein skimmer? Are Refugiums overrated and unnecessary? Wet/dry filter? Something else? I'm just looking for ideas. Going to be a predator FOWLR tank if that changes anything.

Please respond if you have ideas or questions for me.

Thanks!

For a predator tank I would use the largest skimmer you can fit in the sump and and algae turf scrubber. A refugium will not really be as helpful for a predator tank. Not as many pod eaters (corals, small wrasses/dragonets), and a turf scrubber will be more effective at algae control/nutrient reduction than a ball of chaeto will be. Wet dry filter doesn't have much of a place here. That space is better used by a larger sump with a skimmer and turf scrubber area

+1 on what Bpb said.
predators are messy eaters hence the large skimmer ans ATS. get a skimmer rated for 150 to 200 IMHO then make your ATS for the a lil above amount of food you think you will feed daily. ATS dont go on tank size but feeding. what goes in must come out...

with the 2 I think you will be fine.
I also suggest using good quality LR (this is debatable LR vrs dry rock ) but IMHO it's a great way to get your tanks bio filter going + its looks nice too

go slow and don't rush. research every fish to plan on adding and have fun this is a hobby after all.

happy reefing!!

What is an algae turf scrubber? Is it worth it for the cost? I can barely even find any YouTube videos on it. BTW it's a FOWLR

It's a device in the sump used to grow and harvest turf algae. They're mostly done DIY not really any prefab "products" you buy. Just pvc, nylon screen, and a light. They can be done wicked cheap.
