Marineland Overflow

I just bought a Marineland 90g RR and there should not be a problem using the return pipe for an emergency drain to a basement sump instead of using it as a return should there? I will not be doing a Herbie overflow, but may in the future.

I don't think there would be any problems, but if done that way, how is it not a Herbie?

I would have never thought to do it that way. That actually sounds pretty cool. Are you just going to drill a hole for the return or have it go over the side?

If you use the stock drain pipe as is, I guess it still wouldn't be a full-siphon scenario like a Herbie. I'm curious as to what your plan is though because I'm probably going to end up turning my Marineland 65 RR into a Herbie set-up.

The return would just go over the side. I don't see it would not work, but it's my fist time setting up an internal overflow and a basement sump. I wanted to make sure there are no gotchas.

I configured my ML 90 that way. Dual pipe herbie in the overflow, return over the rim.

Did you you use the the 1.5 inch and the 1 inch pipes? The 1.5 inch reduces to 1 inch should I keep it that way and have all 1 inch plumbing after the holes?
