How do i disassemble a vortech mp40qd wetside??

I'm trying to clean my powerheads...I've gotten the guard detached from the propeller blade part....but I cannot remove anything else. Ecotech videos show a different model on every video and i cant find a youtube showing how every piece comes off.

I do not see a red O ring on mine. perhaps its underneath the frame cover.

I have a manual showing full diagram . it does not give details on full removal of things.

please help. I'm soaking this in vinegar right now. thanks

If I remember correctly the latest version went back to three prongs/tabs holding the Impeller/Magnet/Front Plate Cover/Assembly to the back plate. Gently pry the tabs outward to release the front cover and then slide the assembly outwards off the shaft.

I do see the tabs! I'm not strong but I am trying to use a rubber discus thing i use for jars. So I'm pulling the three tabs towards the proper....away from where the DrY side would be....

That would be my next step at where i'm at....and then at that point i would be able to see the propeller parts and I can take that off and disassemble that further...

thank you so much...for the clarification and help

I got it!

Tabs are little prongs. I was able to barely get a finger near under two of them and pry apart. Last one i use a tiny flat head screw driver...and it popped open..

Now for the cleaning..

thank you so much

i had tried calling ecotech but they were closed

I was just trying to remove mine yesterday. After an hour of tinkering figured out it had tabs. I used a small flathead screw driver and they popped right off.

thats what i did on second one. ez as pie once i know what to do.

i can't understand why a big company like ecotech can't just post a true mp40qdwireless video instead of the outdated ones they have. and why they can't do a better qdwireless manual in the support tab of their site.

Any of u all familiar with what happens when you use the smallest spacer (thin sticky sheet) on a tank which has a recommended medium size spacer. Not the largest one. Does speed u set at not correspond to what u set at because of change of magnetism force? Hope that question makes sense. I did cleaning of vortech because my mp40 fell twice. I'm using on backwall which is the glass plus a thinlayer of I'm assuming black material behind glass so that rear glass is not see through. Width of this extra layer is negligible but since changing spacer to the sticky one it hasn't fallen. I thought maybe the powerheads were dirty so I cleaned both. My other one has the medium spacer and hasn't fallen since placement area a few months ago. I do my best to align dry and wet as best I can. Not sure why one mp40 would fall on dry side and one doesn't.... That's whi tried other spacer but since doing so I noticed my sand has moved more than usual...and I wonder if I just mounted it this last time in slightly different spot or if power has changed without me changing schedule program

If you email ecotech about it falling off, and they are within warranty date, they will mail you a new wet side(assuming its the wet side that has the issue). I had issues with one of my mp10's falling off, after emailing back and forth and sending a couple pictures, they over nighted me a new wet side and I haven't had an issue since.

Not sure why everyone has issues with opening and cleaning any ecotech pump? Turn the cage clockwise to unscrew it, gently pry up the three tabs, and it falls apart. Couldn't be much easier. But I do remember my first time cleaning them and trying to figure out how to take it apart, so I can feel your pain and frustration.

One tip to add, take care when screwing the plastic nut back onto the propshaft, since it's metal on plastic it is very easy to cross thread/Mar up the threading on the plastic nut.

@C.Eymann: Are you sure you talk about the QD's? There is metal on plastic somewhere?

Hmmm....... I think maybe the old design was that way? My mp10wqd and mp40wqd both are plastic with 0 metal other then the magnet. The outer cage unscrews from the housing, then there is just 3 tabs that hold the prop and magnet to the outer casing. The outer cage slides over the prop shaft holding the prop in place.

Been gone for 2 months.

MP40's working great since that last cleaning. Soaking them in vinegar / water was the trick to loosening them - weird since I've not had them too long and I'm original owner. Nevertheless..was a learning experience.
