Would you put a rock with Pulsing Xenia in your display tank?
Holy Cow, you guys were right. I fragged a couple stocks of Pulsing Xenia in my quarantine tank and put them in a tupperware container filled with gravel so I could mount/glue them to an isolated rock to place in my display tank. Day one almost every frag had jumped ship (the container's walls were about 4 inches high and they bounced around to different areas of the tank. Today, only three days later, I found a frag growing on one of my tonga branches.
Can I still put Pulsing Xenia in my display tank if I keep an eye on it? Do you have any in your tank?

It hops to other rocks, unfortunately, if it comes loose. It finds a new place to attach. Cool looking, but unless you want a tank overcome by it, pass.

I started out with a tiny frag then it totally took over my tank. It can be peeled off though, fairly easily. That's what I'd do to keep it under control. Now, I have tiny bits here and there that I don't mind.

I had Xenia take over my old tank, but only by growing up and onto things it was touching. I never saw it detach and disperse through the tank, and frankly I don't think it does that. I think it would be easy to keep in one place if it's separate.
Actinodiscus mushrooms are much worse, they do disperse and grow wherever they can attach to. |

Oh, it does fall off then reattach elsewhere Trust me, as someone who had tons of fragments that grew at the opposite end of the tank from the frag.

Years ago I kept it, and I did not have a problem keeping it in check, but it did take regular culling back, and I think the way my tank was scaped and it's location helped w/ that, so some may have different experiences than others.
It used to crack me up that of all the cool things I had my neighbors and friends seemed to love that xenia best, especially when I turned pumps off and they pulsate. My only bummer is xenia is god awful smelling when pulling it out, that smell got really old for me.

I'll have some, but it will be in my display refugium and if I ever find it in my reef tank, it's gone!

Mine came in a maricultured acro. It was a tiny little single polyp. Never did anything for almost a year but lived. Then it started growing so I moved it to its own rock. It moved from the Rock and is now growing on the back glass. I love the look with it back there. And if I need remove it, it's on glass so easy peasy. I really like the movement of it.

I think Xenia are super pretty, but I need space for other corals too, so I kept mine on an "island" in the tank (pretty much a small rock)

I have some. It is fairly east to control I think. I have a pair of hemostats that I use to grab it near the base and pull it off. I have a quiet place under a powerhead in my 6 gal nano that I dump the ends of trimmed frag plugs in. I drop the Xenia frags and Kenya tree offcastings in a pile back there on top of the frag plug rubble. Just a pile of them not placed or anything. After a few days they attach and I give them away. I am going to start growing some out actually. I prune my main tanks about once a week and it stays under control. I also have some Blue Xenia that grows on a stalk like Cauliflower. I just snip some of it off with scissors when it gets too big. The sheared piece on the stump both regrow. GSP in my opinion is much worse. Once the mat encroaches on an unsuspecting coral it will kill it. Allelopathy is strong with the star Polyp, not so with the Xenia..

Have it, would put it in again. In fact, going in my next upgrade. Stuff is great but it isn't for everyone. To tell you the truth I find Xenia less of a nuisance than my rose bubble tip anemone. I started with one of those and now have 6
I think I'm a bit odd though. I have in my current 40 breeder Xenia, blue cloves, Kenya trees, and Damsels - lol.

NO. It took over my entire 500 litre tank. I have literally taken out every single rock and taken off every piece I can see and it still comes back. It's a nightmare that you can't escape. It is really pretty at times but it grows on other corals too so it's a pest and will cause serious issues for you if you want to keep other corals!
