Cotton Candy Algae

Been battling cotton candy algae for a while now. I have been doing the typical manual removal and weekly water changes to keep it in check. Also dose NoPox which has helped as well. It still comes back time and time again though.

Does anyone know what else eats this other than mexican turbo snails? I can't seem to find any locally at all anymore. Wondering if their is another critter that likes to eat this stuff. I read tuxedo urchins don't touch it.

Tank is a 28g with a kessil a-150 and a tunze 9002 skimmer. Has LPS and softies as well as a pair of clowns, a flame hawkfish, and a purple pseudochromis.

According to the link below Urchins, Sea Hares, Turbo snails, Emerald crabs and most Hermit crabs will eat it. Whether or not this is true I don't know. You'll just have to experiment and see what works.

Hm I saw somewhere urchins wouldn't eat it. I could definitely try an emerald crab, even though I am sure it wouldn't really make a dent. I have no desire to add a sea hare, as I have heard horror stories (correct me if I am wrong) about deaths that crash tanks. What urchin could potentially be a good fit for a 28g mixed reef?

Being that I've never had a Sea Urchin before I can't really say, but the links below might help.

Cant find anything that says urchins would even eat the Cotton Candy algae. It seems pretty rare.

Algae needs nutrients to grow. So does the corals, invertebrates, fish, etc.... Excess nutrients encourage the growth of nuisance algae.

Deploy an Algae Turf Scrubber (ATS), and never look back. HERE is a thread concerning them in the Advanced Topics section here at RC. Algae is natures natural filter.

Grow the algae where you want to!

You can also grow chaeto in your sump as well, although not as efficient IMO.

Everyone wants to recommend quick cure suggestions, but not attack the root of the problem. Excess nutrients will always be an issue.

Sometimes it's not so cut & dry like that. Valonia would be an example of this.
