i got back into reef'n because all my other projects were finishing up and i got idle hands. (that was before I bought my 68 mustang) anyway, with school and moving etc will you have time to dedicate yourself to the tank...or use it as stress relief from school?

just looked at your tank specs...what about "downgrading" what you are keeping? maybe a softy and ACAN tank or something that require less attention.

Well, you probably won't get out what you've put in to the tanks so I would suggest another alternative. What I have done in the past when time or money was in short supply is to break down the tank, sell / trade off the livestock and store the equipment until I could set it back up. Can't tell you how many times I sold off equipment at a fraction of what is was worth to turn around a year (or decade for that matter) later and buy stuff all over again.

I completely get I won't get back what I paid. However I have priced my equipment based off prices I'm seeing the items being sold for on ReefCentral, *********, Facebook Reef groups, and even my local and nearby areas. I know roughly what I can get which is a decent amount.

Another thing, I just rebooted my tank. All I have in there is my three fish I've had for years and two tester acro frags.

I'd still do Acros. Whether I get out of the hobby for a short period of time or not.

Don't bother with a small tank. Either stay or get out. All a small tank will do is lead you to get another big tank.

Agreed. I'm a financial minded guy and know my limits. My wife and I have been completely debt free for 5 years now. (I'm under 40 and have 3 children). Let me just say that never being in bondage to money is freedom you cannot explain till you get there. Sell you stuff until it's the right time.

sell, and get excited about a dream system. Take a few years to save and plan. Who knows what new equipment and controllers will be available then!

If you have the discipline, I say pay off your debt now and get a really, really nice system going once you and your finances are ready.

I'd do this.

Grow up and figure out your finances. Having debt and savings isn't very sensible. I almost had to declare bankruptcy back 25+ years ago. My situation was a bad divorce, own 2 much real estate (not at all liquid), involved in another expensive hobby (racing sports cars) and loss of a job while having too much credit card debt. Now I own my home, 2 cars (one pricey hot rod), I have no mortgage, no loans and no credit cards and lots of more liquid investments. You're going to get married and you don't own a house... sell the tank and wait until the finances aren't an issue. This isn't a cheap hobby and getting into it when there are bigger life issues to deal with is just foolish.

That my 2 cents based on my own failings.

Being that you only have 3 fish and 2 acros

i would sell and plan a setup for when im financially stable

as ron reefman said being in debt and having savings is not sensible

sell everything pay back your debt and when your ready you can start saving for your new setup marriage is not cheap

and look at it this way when your ready you can always buy a used setup for the same amount or cheaper than what your selling this setup for

I would sell it all and when things are stable and you feel you have the time build new, and take that time to invite your significant other to share that build w/ you if there is interest.

Just trying my play my cards right and looking for other advice from fellow reefers like yourselves. While of course I will grow up and figure out my own things, I wanted to hear what advice others had as well. I'm a man who likes to plan and learn as much as possible to prevent mistakes from being made. While I welcome mistakes because they do teach, I also welcome knowledge to prevent!

We decided last night where we'd be while we put more away for property. My tank will definitely not work where we'd live so I'll be selling it off and keeping my beloved fish in a smaller tank or giving them to a close experienced reefer.

Good luck in everything you do

I would liquidate horses, fish and put off the marriage until after school. Focus on getting school out of the way and get all your business in order. Then go from there. On a side note, if you're going to sell your current set up and just rebuild it 6 months later, then you might as well keep it. You will take a big loss cashing out.

Its amazing not having a mortgage no car payment and no credit card dept with money in the bank... We paid off our home back in the spring. I Now only have to work Sometimes and sometimes sometimes is not very much..

But i agree with what most are saying. Either figure out how to keep what you have to get all the way out until your stable again and out of school..
