Purigen/phosguard/chemipure elite

Ok. I am currently running chemipure elite and phosguard in my 32 biocube. I am now thinking of adding purigen to it. Any risks of running all three together? I jave had purogen before in other tanks but never used chemipure elite or phosguard before.

I'd just run Purigen and dump the Chemipure. Purigen wont release back into water and the color change will tell you when it's exhausted.

I love Seachem but Phosguard never did anything for me and it's made out of aluminum.

Put in a GFO reactor and run Rowaphos. You'll never look back. Start out at about 1/3 of full dosage and slowing work up to full dose. Here's the hang on reactor I'm using.

You should have zero problems running those three.

With the chemipure elite, the combo of activated carbon and gfo is my favorite to run without a reactor. I find reactors messy. But I run smaller sized tanks so the bag works for me. If you want, you can buy from BRS in bulk and bag them yourselves. I'd research how many microns the material is and get the respective size filter bags.

Also with the chemipure elite, i suggest you follow the directions on how to gently rinse the bag. I run it under a very light flow for about 3 minutes while gently turning the bag.

Im with GoVol's about the phosguard. I don't like it.

Purigen is something I love to have as well. But if you don't want to run the GFO or plan to run the GFO in a reactor. I suggest you try ChemiPure Blue, which has a similar resin as purigen with the activated carbon.

ChemiPure Blue = Activated Carbon + Silicate Removal Resins like Purigen but NO GFO

ChemiPure Elite = Activated Carbon + GFO no Purigen like Resins

I run Chemipure Elite + Purigen all rated for 50g, my tank is only 20, probably less bc of the sand and rock.

I shake gently in WC water to "unclog" them since they can collect detritus and other things on the bag and my tank isn't heavily stocked so I just do the recommended 3 months and change them out.

Purigen can be regenerated, but I don't do it since a new bag is relatively cheap.

Just out of curiosity what are you aiming to accomplish? I mean are you trying to reduce nitrate, phosphates or polish your water? I agree you can safely run the three together, but you've got a little redundancy if you do, and personally I like to use products made to work together. And FWIW I use phosguard to help reduce phosphates, keeps the algae under a little better control IMO.

If you plan on having Xenias I would not run purigen, now this could just be my experience but I could not keep them alive when i was running it in a bag in the sump. They just closed up and shrank away... by the 3rd frag I decided to remove the purigen... bam they couldn't be happier along with my green toad stool. I was running the full 250ml to 50 gallons maybe thats why. I have yet to try it again as I see no difference..

True Dat,

Xenias and softies like high organic water. That's what Purigen does absorbs organics.

That's why your Xenia would melt away.

Xenia can turn into a phosphate / nitrate sump.
