CFL bulbs going extinct what to do
My algae bucket scrubber only has enough room for cfl bulbs less reflector using 120 or 150 watts. Home depot now only carries a few options up to 100 watts and no red led grow bulbs. Tried feit 9watt led red grow bulbs twice longest they last is 3 weeks and die. What other options are there to try?

I have good results (way better than cfl) from a 24 w par led like this for my waterfall scrubber:https://www.amazon.com/MarsHydro-Lig...+led+grow+bulb
You don't need a reflector, may have to mount the bulb a lot farther from the algae than with CFL. Note the color is awful red, not a pretty sight but the algae loves it. |

How close to the screen can I go with this LED bulb? I've had it now 3 days about 4 inches from the screen and the algae is still dark green no die off. Mixing 2 CFL and 1 LED is running the lights 18/6 still ok? Should I move the LED closer?

Running the lights 18 hours on and 6 hours off as instructed by the scrubber pros. Now found out LEDs run at less hours than CFL not sure how to combine the both 1 led and 2 CFL bulbs. Was thinking if its too much I can try adding a 24 hr timer to the led set 30 min on 30 min off.

I have mine on 12 on / 12 off. I have a waterfall scrubber. Bulb is 9 1/2 inches from the waterfall screen which is 12 by 12. Really I think you want to adjust the distance so the spot is centered on the screen and reaches the edges. The algae is just as thick in the center of the spot but paler- probably too intense there. I don't use additional bulbs.
The spot is more precise than my old cfl plus reflector - I don't get unwanted algae in the sump with this setup. |
