Chocolate Ship Starfish-Dead?

How can I discern if my Chocolate chip Starfish is dead, or alive?

Check where is before you go to bed and look again in the morning. If he did not move then he may be dead. Generally they are more active at night.

normally if a starfish dies they will turn a bleach color like crustin said pick him up

Pick him up. If he is limp than he is dead, right?

not necessary, when you pick him up are there any sign of rot/decay? if not put him back in, unless you are positive hes dead

I lost one a few weeks ago. He died a few days after I put him in. I bought another one last week. Unfortunately the LFS did not tell to never expose the Starfish to air. So I lifted both of them right out of the water. The first one died. He had slime on him, and he was limp. I moved the second one last night to the front of the tank. He was moved about two inches this morning, but the Hermit Crabs could have moved him. I'll find out soon in any event.
BTW. I bought a third Choco. Star yesterday, and the seller gave me acclimation instructions, and the rule of, "Do not expose them to air." I acclimated him for 3 hours.

I knew you could not expose sponges to air but I did not know you could not expose a starfish to air. Is this correct?

im not sure but you can pick him up without exposing him to air

I think I have seen my porcelain starfish get exposed to air when I do water changes?

Yeah. I'm not pulling them out of the water anymore, but obviously it is OK to pick them up underwater. Anyway the exposure to air could have killed the first one as he died inexplicably after a few days. The second might be dead too. I will check soon to eliminate ammonia if he is dead. The first one smelled awfully odorous when he died, but it did not smell until the moment that I removed it. I have high hope that the third one will live. I acclimated him for 3 hours. The verdict is not in yet on # 2.

Was the star removed completely from water? I think it must be removed completely from water to die.

as far as i know it's all starfish

Hi I was on google trying to figure out what to do about my starfish and when I started reading the situation seemed a little similar. I have had my starfish for about 3-4 days now and when I got him the lady at the pet store didn't say anything to me about him eating anything specific I figured it was the remains of fish food or something. So point is he hasn't really been fed properly it seems as I have just learned since they eat shell fish i guess, but my real question I haven't found anywhere is can the starfish be dead because I exposed him to air when transferring him from the pet bag (which had rocks and some green stuff I didn't want in the clean water) or if he isn't dead how do I help him get out of shock from being exposed to air?

A morbid solution, cut off a piece of a limb, if it is still alive, it should grow back. There is most likely a better way though

I'm glad my serpent and brittle stars haven't found out. I've had any number of nieces and nephews and now their kids pick them up and hold them over the years and have yet had one to die because of that.

Ditto for many sponges - yes, some will die if exposed. The inter-tidal species, not so much.
