My skim looks like dark tea, so whatever that is, that's what I do.
I think it's somewhere in the middle between dry and wet. Damp, maybe?

Yeah, hard to say which you do with out anything actually defined. I'd say that sounds more wet to me but moist maybe? My wife hates that word...

Posted this in another thread but I get a thick dark sludge that is black in my skimmate locker.

This thread sucks with out pictures.

My favorite pic of mine. I call it upside down dairy queen blizzard thick.

Can see how sticky thick it is. Survived and stayed together through unscrewing and taking it off the skimmer in my basement sump using a ladder, walking up some stairs, dodging dogs, cats, kids, toys, etc, brought outside, placed upside-down on porch table, quickly take a picture (seen above) before I have to dodge wife complaining that nasty thing is on the table, brought out to the yard and lid unscrewed off. Foam still intact. lol

It seems to me that the amount of gung is probably about the same. If you dry skim the gunk is thick on the skimmer neck and on the walls of the collection cup. If you skim wet the gunk is in the skimmate. I have a drain in the floor of the collection cup. (MTC 36)

I agree, if you hook a drainage hose to the skimmer cup and collect the waste in a 5 gallon bucket, same amount of gunk accumulates inside the skimmer neck if you dont clean the cup until the bucket is filled.

When you dry skim, more bubbles collapse while still inside the skimmer neck and the gunk accumulates there. This is because you lower the water level inside the skimmer for dry skimming, as a result; bubbles need to travel higher and longer. By the time bubbles reach to the top of the skimmer, they dry out. So the gunk accumulates on the neck and little amount of water makes it way to the cup. On the other hand, if you wet skim more bubbles make it through the neck and collapse inside the cup while bringing in more water.

Changing the water level inside the skimmer should not change how much waste can be exported out. When you wet skim water level is higher and perhaps there is slightly more water-air contact due to increase water column height, but were are talking about few more inches here, not something that would drastically increase contact time .

I bet if you dry skim for a week and wet skim for a week and collect and evaporate the water out the waste, you would get more or less same amount of dried gunk.

Open the collection cup, take a sniff when wet skimming, and another sniff while dry skimming. The pungent odor difference may give you a good clue to what pulls out more.
