Single Drain for 120 - Help

Hey guys.
I'm upgrading to a 120 Gallon tank. The overflow box is in the corner with a single 1 1/2" drain. Unfortunately its placed dead center of the over-flow box. I tried doing a Durso Stand Pipe, but it won't fit with the 1 1/2" PVC. So I had the make the 90 Elbow a 1" instead, using a coupling to fit it. Even then, its still extremely tight and will only fit if I lean the Durso back a little bit.

Is there any issue with this? The Durso is still completely plugged into the bulkhead, just not straight on.

Single drain is kind scary like what if it gets clog due to whatever? Where is your emergency drain?

I know... I thought the same.

I don't have one. Its just a 120 Visio with a single drain.

I'll definitely be picking up a breakout box for my Apex to shut the system down completely.

Instead of reducing the plumbing down from 1.5" to 1", you can build a Stockman standpipe. That will effectively quiet down your overflow, avoid reducing down to 1" and will fit in your confined space.

Also, instead of drilling a bunch of small holes which could potentially get clogged, cut out two big squares for holes in the downpipe (C) and your flow will be quiet and unrestricted. Just size everything up from the instructions to accommodate a 1-1/2" downpipe. I ran one for years back in the day with no issues whatsoever.

Agree on the stockman. I did it with small holes, and they eventually clogged. So many floods. If I was going to do it again, I really like the design above.

I used 1.5" standpipes for years. Pipe was about 2" below the overflow level so that the water would only fall about 2". No durso or anything. Just a strainer in the top to keep a snail from getting in. They will flow a tremendous amount. I never had a clog, but think about what it would take to clog 1.5".

These will flow more than a durso, IMO. This will do about 2000 GPH where a durso will be about 1500 - you have to pay a bit for the noise suppression of the durso. If they are noisy at first, they quiet down when the slime starts to get on them - you can hear them, but they are not noisy, IME.

BTW - I would take a single 1.5" over a pair of 1" any day.
