Chitons
Chitons are so cool. I never heard of them before until about 10 yrs ago I was checking out my 120 reef at night and I saw one clinging to the inside of my glass. It was about 2" long. A living fossil.
They've been around for over 400 million years. Just think, you could be breeding living fossils. |

Not that it helps with your situation but it would be really interesting to see a shot of all these guys roaming around your tank at night. I think they are cool little beasts and I too would purchase them if I came across a source.

If anyone is truly looking to purchase some chitons, reefcleaners regularly have them up for sale. They sell out fast, but they typically have them every couple weeks for sale.

Found a couple in my tank a few months ago, not a clue where they came from. They are starting to spread as well, found babies wandering the glass the other night. I'd think it is like any animal/organism, where population goes in cycles. You must currently have a lot to feed them, eventually they over populate and die off from lack of food. Considering the amount of people on here right now asking to buy some I'd definitely try harvesting as much as you can haha.

I wouldn't want chitons in the tank anywhere near the glass or acrylic. Chitons teeth are coated with magnetite, the hardest material made by a living organism.
They will 100% put little tiny teeth marks across any aquarium surface. https://www.newscientist.com/article...-in-the-world/ I find them all the time when collecting stuff for my coldwater marine tank.

I had Shingle Urchin (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colobocentrotus_atratus) for many years in my reef tank. Brought it back from one of my scuba diving trips to Hawaii. Beautiful animal.
It was busy all day scraping coralline algae from all surfaces of my tank helping it to spread everywhere. It left in fact teeth marks on plastic items: Oceanic tank black overflow insert, Maxi-jet powerhead, etc. But no harm to glass at all. I am not scared of your chitons - if you can ship them to me I would be glad to have some. Pszemol -- Maroon Clownfish, breeding pair, Red BTA. |
