Scopas tangs.. destroyer of GHA

I always see post about a good gha eating fish.

My 99 gallon had a quite a bit of gha.. a week ago I picked up a scopas tang.. and I tell you what.. I don't have a strand of GHA in my tank now..

Will a scopas eat cheato? I've got enough in my fuge to feed an army lol

OR would it be better for her if I get some Nori?

I tossed a bit of cheato in the display to see if she will ear it or not.. time will tell

They don't like chaeto in general. But, every fish Is different, you can try to feed him with chaeto.

She tried it.. but that's about it. Back to pecking at rocks and the glass...
She still has a fat belly.. but i am gonna grab her some food today

I feed my tangs (Kole, Purple and Caribbean Blue) a Romaine lettuce leaf and a half sheet of Nori. Herbivores need to be grazing all day.

Do you just clip the leaf on a clip in the tank.. or do you let the Romain and Nori float about?

I tried that for the Nori but the Caribbean just ripped the nori off the clip and much got wasted. The gourmet grazer allows for everyone to graze. I also have a Two Barred Rabbitfish who gorges on Nori.

Are scopas omnivores?

I feed my tank once a week with brine shrimp cysts (decapitated)
Today..along with pecking at the rocks.. I've seen it eat a few hundred brine shrimp hatchlings.. and a few left over mysis shrimp from feeding my hidden cup corals and clowns..

I don't know of it is normal behaviour.. or I should get the scopas a friend.. but it hangs out with my 2 clowns all day.. once in a while.. the female clown will take a jab at the tang.. but 99 percent of the time..all 3 are together..

Scopas just ate 2 more mysis..and is now back to catching brine out of the current with the clowns

Tangs are herbivores. That means in order to be healthy the NEED plants. Any animal will do what it needs to survive but a tang needs nori or other plant matter to flourish,

The second part is that brine shrimp offer little or no nutritional value for fish. It is like expecting a human to do well just eating candy. The possible exception is newly hatched baby brine as they still have the egg sack that has nutritional value.

Your Scopas NEEDS nori in order to flourish and it is need daily, not once a week. Start reading and researching. Check out some of the sub forums on different reef fish.

I do have nori... I have lfs sea weed in the tank as well...

I just noticed my fish eating something that confused me..

I have had Nori since the day it was mentioned above...

I'm not sure why you are assuming I am not feeding this fish.. or only offering it Nori once a week as you stated... I have only had the fish for 1 week... it has had a full belly since day one.. and still does..
It cleaned my tank of all algea... so I posted this.. I was informed on food choices.. a few hours later... and I have had both Nori and seaweed in the tank since an hour after it was mentioned. And then I asked about better clips..they are in the mail now...

I have reasurched everything I put in my tank pretty heavily..before I purchase...

I asked about it eating brine and mysis.. well because I have never read about or seen that behavior...

I understood it to mean that you only fed your tank once a week. My post was also to respond to your next posting that asked "Are scopas omnivores?" Maybe that was asked tongue in check?

I was surprised by the posts because you had asked about feeding romaine and nori.

Again I am sorry for my confusion. You seem to be making good choices regarding your tank and keep on researching and asking questions.

Ohhh.. I gotcha.. I see where the misunderstanding happened... I feed the brine as a treat so to speak once a week.. I mentioned that because of the fact it was eating brine. And mentioned me feeding the tank once a week with brine so anyone who reads this will know why I have brine in the tank..

I have a smorgasbord of differant foods under the tank that I feed individuals with..

My tank and critters..as well as dog.. all eat way better than I do lol


I should have elaborated more... the tang is eating the brine as well as mysis... even though it has a nice juicy piece of Nori on one side of the tank.. and a juicier peice of red Sea weed on the other side of the tank...

It has eaten like 5 mysis that I have seen. It was surprised after it ate the first one.. then was all happy and excited when it ate the others...

Almost as if it is seeing the clowns eat these things.. and is mimicking them... I've even seen it snack on some of the pellet food I offer the clowns..


I know that brine shrimp aren't super nutrious... but wanted to try them anyways... and the wify loves the fact that there are "sea monkeys" in the tank now... but i have noticed all of my corals (frogspawn..random zoas/toadstool leathers...xenia and GSP all seem very very happy the day I drop the eggs in... and well after they are hatched and only a few left floating in the water column... so that's why I do that. They are happy.. I am happy lol. As well as if the wife is happy.. so am I lol

I absolutely adore mine - Smokey - that's his name, you know.
I feed him Omega One Green Algae, 3X / week - he loves it!
He's also quite the meat eater: Mysis, caviar, Rod's Food, Formula One Tang Blend, Mega Marine, Marine Cuisine, squid, brine - I alternate foods for my fish.

He's CONSTANTLY grazing my live rock and on the prowl for hair algae!
