How much sand for pistol shrimp/goby combo?

Hey guys,
I was just wondering how many inches of sand is necessary for a pistol/goby combo. I'm thinking it won't work in my tank because I only have around 1.75-2" of sand, because I'm not looking to do a DSB, just want the nice look of a sand bottom. This probably isn't enough right? Will they build up an area of the sand to make a burrow in?

Just asking as a future reference, only going to be adding frags for the next month or two. Thanks!

My sandbed is only about 2" or so. My tiger pistol moves it around constantly. Adding some small rubble/empty snail shells helps. They like to "shore up" the entrance to their burrow. My yasha haze and pistol's burrow entrance changes places several times a day.

I have about 2.5" in my current 29g and will have about the same in my new 120. My goby / shrimp pair have no problem. I agree with Sugar Magnolia, a ot of little pieces of rubble make the shrimp happy, and keep him building all the time.
