Eels and tank lids

So I need a lid but condensation is a concern. I made a plan and wanted to get some opinions on it.

1) the lid will be about 2 inches above the water.
2) I will place 6 glass panels across the top (9x23 inches)
3) I want two arc indentions cut in each side so that when the panels are together a straight portion of glass will butt up against an arc.
4) Each arc will be 4.5 in long.

The question is whats the max width to avoid eel escape? .5 in, .25?

The idea is that the air exchange will reduce condensation. But the primary purpose is containment.

What about a screen?
Let's light through, lets air through, but keeps things in...

In all honesty I would build a canopy. I used to do the lid thing on my eel Aquarium trust me when I say they can still find a way out. I now have a canopy on both of my eel tanks that are a foot off the water surface. I can also get my lights inside there and on the back of the canopy the wood goes up halfway and the other 6 in I have that plastic screen that you would use over gutters, stapled to the back of canopy. This way the canopy can breathe. Have not had an eel Escape or try to escape in the four or five years I've been running a canopy.
