Heresy?

Might be inviting some grief, but here goes.

My red plating/encrusting Monti has rapidly overtaken most of my hi light & hi flow areas in my Red Sea 525.

Meanwhile, my frag tank is filling with Acro frags and small colonies that captivate my attention.

So, yes I can bust up all my encrusting monti and the rocks they've welded together and start over, or... wait for it...

Can I just mount those ACRO beauties smack on the face of the monti? I've seen you guys "blend" different color montis together to interesting effect. But I have never seen Acros mounted on top of monti plates.

My guess at answering my own question is that the monti will overtake my Acros by encrusting them too.

(I am not overly stupid, mostly just ignorant and seeking your insights.)

In my experience it’s the acros that kill the monti.

Yes it's been done, never can predict results. A lot of acro folks end up hating monti's as they grow quickly and eat up real estate. Screw the "rules, norm", do what you like.

I have done it. Despite the acros typically being the sting winner, the larger Montipora have the “endurance” and growth speed to kill the Acro though. You just need to have some nippers or a metal pick and scrape back the monti creep. Once it gets established I think it looks awesome. Incredibly realistic- the ocean doesn’t have frags plugs and epoxy!
