Glass sumps
My 100g back then had an acrylic sump and the 120g I'm setting up now has a glass one. I know many people are using glass aquariums as a sump without issues but mine without a top or bottom plastic trim just seems much more fragile. I try to be extra cautious when working down there cause a crack would be a disaster.

So did you remove the top trim or something?...

No, that was how the sump was made. Looks to be 1/4" glass.

I have used standard glass tanks as sumps for years. However all have had plastic bracing. Although rimless glass tanks are made without bracing I’m not sure about using one without. I would not be worried about it holding water rather the work in or around it. If it is in a high work zone and possibly getting knocked into maybe reconsider. Guess it comes down to what you feel comfortable with. If you are already nervous about it I would anti up and get something you feel good with.

It will be totally fine. First off, it will only be filled about half way with water. Second, all the baffles act as bracing. I would put foam under it like is done with any rimless aquarium but other than that I wouldn’t worry at all about it.

In planning my build, the stand was designed to contain about 30 gal of water underneath. Over time, that has been a blessing when the skimmer went nuts, a siphon got blocked, or a leak was not discovered right away.
Also, just plain “Duh” on my part. I’m a pilot. Hope for best, plan for the worst. Works at home too. |
