Too much flow for return?

I’m setting up a 35g cube with 15g sump. I already have my old Eheim 1262. It’s rated for 900 gph. Will that be too much for this sized tank?

Possibly, but depends also on plumbing/head pressure. You could always add a valve and choke it back some.

But wouldn’t choking the flow be bad for the pump?

It's a waste of power (though a pump that is restricted will use less power overall) and space, but it isn't bad for the pump. The pump has no idea if it is pumping up 8 feet or it is pumping up 3 feet with a ball valve. Just make sure to put the ball valve on the output side, not the input side.

Instead of choking back the pump you can add a tee. You can discharge some of the water back to the sump or use it to feed another piece of equipment or filter. So you can use one pump for two uses.

But wouldn’t that feed go mostly to the path of least resistance of the tee? I do plan on adding a couple of tees for my gfo reactor and future outputs

And I will have a Refugium in my sump. So maybe I can come up with a different setup? I planned on going skimmer, Fuge, return

You have to add a valve to the tee. I forgot to mention that. I would put one on each side leaving the tee. It is not necessary to put one on the side returning to your display but it is nice to have.

Using the excess flow to power a manifold is a great idea, but putting a T going back into the sump for no reason is completely unnecessary and will waste power and stir up your sump for no good reason.

If you are doing a manifold you should put a ball valve controlling all exit points (aquarium, carbon, etc) so you can control and shut them off individually. One "trick" that I've learned is when gluing up the PVC always put an extra ball valve either with a union or threaded output that is unused. As time goes on you'll find a use for it and it will save you a lot of hassle trying to alter your existing manifold that is currently operating your tank.

The idea was to let him use the pump he already has. There is no problem with having extra flow in the sump IMHO. Until he hooks up additional equipment it is a waste of energy. Less is more. When he adds equipment to it is when he sees the efficiency.

thanks for the replies guys. I'm kind of torn between trying to make use of most of the equipment i have and just buying certain items new. I just dont want to set everything up and then have an issue with something. I've been eyeing the eheim compactON series, and at the same time trying to come up with a plan to make my 1262 work for me
