SRO-PS-3000INT, (came with the tank).
I've got this skimmer on a custom 150g with a 50g sump (roughly 185g total water volume), 8 fish averaging about 3-4" max. I believe this skimmer to be overkill for this system, even if I were to add more fish and create a "Heavy Bio-load". I've tried running it 6.5" deep water, and up to 9.5" water depths, and there's no difference, it just doesn't produce much muck. As it is now, I have the "fine" bubbles up in the cup to get any production from the skimmer. I'm going to be adding a few more fish, and I'm thinking about downgrading to the SRO-PS-2000INT. Do you think I'll be kicking my self in the butt for downgrading?

Daimyo68, I have the sro3000int on my 125 with 30 sump and 10 fuge for the last year. Not overwhelming at all. Seriously thinking of downsizing to the 2000int or something smaller.
How soon will you be switching?

Not sure how soon I'll be making the change. This is the first Reef Octo that I have owned. I've almost always had Bubble Magus skimmers and was always happy with them, so I want to get some more opinions and hear what others have to say/recommend on the subject of this skimmer vs downgrading to the 2000INT.
As mentioned, this skimmer came with the tank when I purchased it, and I'm not exactly sure how the previous owner came to her decision to go with the 3000INT. She's an experienced reefer/breeder whom I respect and trust in her words, but I just feel that it is "too much skimmer" for a system with this water volume. I honestly don't know if I could add enough fish to create a "high Bio-load" environment to give this skimmer a workout. You mention "not overwhelming at all". Do you feel it's a good fit for your system/bio-load/water volume, or that's it's too much? Do you think the 2000INT will perform better than the 3000INT on your system?

I feel it is too big for my system, which is one yellow tang, one blue hippo, large malenaris wrasse, coral beauty, two anthias, Pajama cardinal, two clowns, and it's pretty well stocked with frogspawn, hammers, leathers, chalices, montiporas, bird nests, and many other spa and lps.
That being said, I do not feel like I get consistent slim mate from the skimmer. My initial feeling is that is too oversized for my system. Maybe the sro2000 will perform better due to the 6" body and smaller neck?

I got a 5000ext used and it didn't come with any instructions, what is the best way to measure gph so I know I'm not over/under doing it?

Determine how long it takes to collect one gallon of water and divide by 3600.
For example, 14 seconds to fill an one gallon container equals 257 gph.

Those with a sro ro-ps 3000int:
1. What size drain tube would I need to direct my cup drain to a waste container? 2. Do you find this works or does it end up clogging with muck too soon?
