You should also visit California Academy of Science, they have an amazing reef display

My amazing girlfriend took me here for the first time in Jan for my Bday. We got a hotel close to the aquarium and with the hotel they offered a partner plan and we got a two day admission for $40 each!!! Need less to say we spent both days there and did a couple of the tours. I cant wait to go back. I find myself pretty lucky to have a woman that wants to not only give me the experience but also enjoy it with me and root on the hobby. She says "whys it so expensive?" I say "because it makes a lot of people very happy" she said "fair enough" I think shell have her own tank soon... Life/relationship goals.

And I also agree, if you can swing it, visit the Academy of Science in San Francisco. Really awesome aquarium as well!

She meant the hobby in general is expensive.... The aquarium isnt bad for what it is IMO.

Up here in Wisconsin, the closest thing I have is the Milwaukee Zoo and Discovery world. The zoo has some impressive freshwater fish exhibits, but Discovery World has more of a mixture and unusual tank shapes, like walking through a tunnel, or walking on glass, etc. My trip out to Monterey years ago has always been a highlight! Fantastic place!

You practically have liveaquaria/diversden/dfs in your backyard, I would give up any public aquarium in my state for that

I think the Philippine reef is in Cal Academy.

I like the Monterey Bay reef aquarium setup better, small, but well maintained.
The one at Cal Academy, I must say, every time I go, it looks worse and worse, probably because it is a lot harder to maintain a large aquarium. bigger is not better in this case.

Yep, I think you're right. What I was thinking of at MBA is the warm water coral reef section on the 2nd floor. Although I was just looking at their site and I'm not sure if they have it anymore?

Funny we actually had no plans to go to Monterey Bay, we just wanted to stay near Big Sur. It was raining when we got there so went and checked it out and had no idea it was so amazing compared to other aquariums. Lucky find for us!!!

Thanks next time we're there we'll check out the Academy of Science!
