Could be. It's about a year old. About the time it may start giving me issues. But really the only sounds under my stand is the return pump and the overflow draining into the sump. Not loud at all still. I love the skimmer though. I had a reef octopus space saver 150 that I liked a lot but this one is a huge upgrade. Easy to adjust and pulls out a bunch of thick nasty skimmate.

I just got my CO-1 and installed it in the sump of my Ruby Cube. This thing makes a noticeable hum. I'm not sure what people call "dead silent" I'm wondering if its defective.

It is not dead silent there is no such thing, even my dc pumps make a slight humm. Sicce pumps defiantly are not dead silent, they are not loud pumps either but they do make more noise than DC pumps.

So due to limited sump space I decided to get a q2.
Like others have complained about they still did nothing to fix the problem with the bubble plate popping off. So after the bubble plate popped off for the second time and overflowed the skimmer, I decided to use a couple of zip strips to secure the plate to the pump. Problem solved.

Second problem I'm having is micro bubbles making there way back to the display. Only way to solve this was to turn the skimmer so the output faced the back of the sump and not the return section.

Like others have said I wish the collection cup was a little larger. But over all this skimmer is performing well.

does the collection cup not have a drain to fill a bottle or
locker?

just want to say i love my Q1 and it is MUCH quieter than my previous CoralBox D700. It is collecting dark skimmate. Only negative is the skimmer cup is pain to clean.

Initial impressions of the Q-2

I took advantage of Marine Depot's current sale on these and upgraded from an Eshopps S-120 to a Q-2 on my 93-gallon seagrass tank.

The S-120 was not enough skimmer for this application. I have very few animals in the tank (hardly any, in fact); yet the bioload seems rather high. I think I underestimated the seagrass' impact on the bioload when I got the S-120. While it's true that they are plants, they aren't quite the relatively simple nutrient sinks that we often think of algae as being. They shed leaves. And since I have a lot of plants, that means they shed leaves a lot. I do my best to fish out the litter; but there's a lot of it and some of the smaller bits can't be retrieved easily. There's also a lot of the plant below the sand; and it's constantly sloughing off outer root material.

The S-120 is not a bad skimmer by any means; but I had a hard time adjusting it so that the extracted foam would actually collapse rather than overfilling the cup as dry foam. The water level adjustment mechanism on the Eshopps skimmers doesn't afford a lot of fine control—really the only major drawback to these skimmers.

The Q-2 is very quiet; much quieter than the S-120. I attribute this mostly to the Q-2's rubber feet: they really help deaden vibration from the pump. The Q series have a really nice water level adjustment control; I've had a much easier time getting the water level where I want it.

Obviously, the Q-2 is a substantial volume upgrade from the S-120; but I'm really impressed with the Q-2's economy of space. I use a 20H for my sump; and there's not a whole lot of clearance above it inside the stand. I had no trouble working the Q-2 in there; and it fits comfortably in my sump (which, admittedly, doesn't have much else in it).

So, some more time will tell if this skimmer gets the job done. I've had some persistent issues with cloudy water that I attribute mostly to algae in the water. I do no mechanical filtration (and I want to keep it that way). I've also had intermittent bouts of cyanobacteria covering the sand. I'm hoping that heavier skimming will help resolve these issues.

Guy I need help!!! I have a redsea reefer 450. Just fired up my q2 it is three inches from the bottom. And my water line is just below the tips of the cones. I'm barley getting any skin and the valve is almost completely closed. Please help not sure we're to measure from. Pics would help me the most.

Your running it in too shallow of water they reccomend 6. 5" -8" depth.. So basically if the skimmer is sitting on the bottom of the sump the skimmer needs the water level to be 6.5" to 8" to operate effectively If your sump chamber level is deeper set it on something like a skimmer stand, upside down bowl, DIY Egg crate stand etc,if it's lower than 6.5" your kinda screwed

3" is not enough water at all you need to run the minimum level at least and I believe it's 6.5".. You measure from the base/bottom where the skimmer is touching the floor or whatever you use to elevate it no pictures needed imo

3-inch of water is way too low and you may damage the pump if it is not fully submerged. Raise the water level to 8 inches and see what happens.

And always read the manual before you put anything in the water.
