Check it out! Cheap MH lights
http://www.e-conolight.com/Product/EFamily.asp
This site has really cheap ballasts and MH lights. What do you think, can these be used on a reef with the appropriate bulb? |

You would have to buy a different bulb more than likely. The one that is in the fixture is probably a very low K lamp. Also, I would be leery of the type of ballast that is built in; will it run off of in house current. And you would have to wire it for a power cord.
But.... if this is easy stuff than it is pretty inexpensive and in a hood you wouldn't mind the looks. - maker |

Not too bad, I wonder what the top looks like?
I think these have enclosed ballasts though, not sure if that's a good idea (heat, possible exposure the salt, ect...) But once you've paid for shipping and a decent lamp you're about up to around what you could pay on ebay for a nice remote ballast, reflector, socket, wiring and lamp...

Well, maybe you could remove the ballast, rewire it and locate it remotely. It looks like the ballast is enclosed in the unit though.

The specs actually do read UL Approved for moist environments so it should be okay above the tank or in a hood.
Can someone help out on the ballast part; will it work on normal house current or no? - maker |

it will work on house current but the ballast is in the box with the bulb that = too much heat near the water probly causing excess evap and water temps would probly sky rocket

Ballast wasnt the hottest part of my MH system. The bulb just cranks out heat and unless shielded just bled light everywhere
