Scrubbing the rocks? I guess I need to read up on this stuff a little more!!!
Me too. That's part of why I like it. The amount of learning that you can do is virtually endless.
Unfortunately, thanks to cap'n all I learned from this thread was how to play "music" on a turkey baster. Well at least it's something. American idol here I come.

to really take the load off the skimmer, I run a filter sock for 24 hours after I baste the live rock and substrate. Protein skimmers do remove some nitrates and phosphates but not near as much as they do organics--so when you put them back into the water column the filter sock helps

Invention

Made my own tool out of the siphon for vacuuming the bottom. I installed a battery operated rotating toothbrush inside the vacume tube. While doing a water change it turn on the tooth brush to clean green algae off live rock while the water sucks it out so it dont go all over my tank.

Pretty old post, but I have to suggest sonic scrubber, like an electric toothbrush that is battery powered, water proof, comes w/ multiple head choices.

+1 for the toothbrush.

I also use on occasions a stiff nylon bristle brush.
