2 home made sump/fruf questions...Comb and tape?

Building my sump/frug using a glass 29gal. Bought all my glass for partitions today.

#1: Do I really need the comb type slots? My intake is going to be a 4"x4"x15" tall corner. I was just going to have it over flow into the skimmer section. Does it need the comb type slots? If so, how do I do that in glass panes?

#2: Top edges of glass partitions are sharp as heck. I dont have anything to break those edges off handy. Can I use something like a clear packing tape, just to cover the edges? Or am I opening a box of horrors doing so?

If you had the glass made the glas cutter should have beveled the edges for you. You could find a glass cutter and get them beveled so you do get hurt. I don't have any slots on my fuge and it works just fine by overflowing one pane to the next.
