Skimmer fed off return.. ?

I have an ASM G3 skimmer that I modded for recirc. It has been hooked up to be fed directly from my return (~150g/h or so) for a few months now. I have been thinking lately that the air that flows through my return is messing up the capability of this skimmer. It burps out through the skimmer which I am thinking messes up the foam. What is the trick to eliminate the burping bubbles in the skimmer??

Are your returns from skimmer to sump, under water? Do they have any sort of opening so air can get in?
