Will adding a piece of base rock re-cycle the tank?
Hi all. I'm wanting to add a nice sized rock to my tank (which has been up for almost a year now), to fill in a hole. The shape of the rock is going to have to be somewhat specific, so I'm thinking it might be easier to find with just some base rock, instead of live rock. Will adding just one piece (maybe 2-3 lbs) of base rock to my existing system create a new cycle, or cause any problems?

no problems, that tank would slightly cycle again if you added a BIG piece of un cured live rock with a lot of die-off, causing ammonia to spike and a short cycle to happen until the die off is over. A piece of base rock should be fine, and the existing LR should re-seed the dead rock.

If it is only a 2-3 lb piece of base rock, and your filters/live rock is working properly, your tank should not notice it. If it is REALLY uncured live rock, than it may shock your system a bit. I would say put it in, monitor water quality, and cut any other nutrient inport way down fo0r a few days until you are sure your system is handling it. Hope this helps.
