sea swirl question

hi all,
Im thinking about getting a sea swirl for my return line, however I was thinking tonight, how do you handle the siphon break issue with a sea swirl? does it have one built in? or can you drill a small hole somewhere? thanks to anyone with any ideas/advice

To what siphon break issue are you referring? How low do you plan on having your seaswirl?

I have mine mounted at the very top of the water column so when I shut the pumps off they siphon only a moderate amount of water out of the tank and into the sump.

Unless you add loc-line and extend it, the sea swirl is very high, mostly interrupts water at the surface.

thanks for the info, Im just concerned about potentially flooding the sump if the pumps go off with the sea swirl

playful - how has the check valve worked for you? ive heard people are a little leary of check valves since they can fail due the calcium and minerals in a reef tank, but I might look into that

guess I'll have to take a look once I get the sea swirl and I can go from there,
thanks

You just have to drill a hole in the elbow that slips over the colar that moves on the SS, just make sure you drill beflow the colar.

FWIW, I've used the 1" models for about 4-5 years now. I never liked the fitings that come with the SS's. The pipe is reduced a lot plus its too high in the tank. The 1" uses 1.25" PVC fittings. I bought 2x 1.5" black elbows, 2x 1.5" black couplers and 1.5" too 1.25" reducers. This really extends the flow from the SS's down plus allows much more water to flow though em.

Hi golfish,

Do you have any pics of your sea swirl with the new elbows. I just got a 1" sea swirl and I would love to modified it like yours.

Thanks,
Jeffrey

Sanblas,
The thing you gotta watch is snails/livestock getting between the moving elbow and the tank wall. I leave mine on 24/7 cause the snails are just crazy! I timer the main pump and run a smaller "Quiet One (old grundfos style)" at night. But use a different water exit in tank not the Swirl at nite. Also use 2 check valves-1 2"swing (big pump) and 1 1/2" thread low pressure pvc check valve from osh (hardwear store) Drilling holes were not good for me in the past. No problems with my check valves yet. Using for over two years. Oh, I think they have Sea Swirl extention kits or you can get pvc fittings for it too.
Daniel
