Overflows on back of tank?

It seems like I have read around here of reef ready tanks that have the overflows on the back of the tank instead of on the inside where they take up space.

I am correct on this and if so who makes them?

That seems like a great idea to me.

You might be talking about hang-on-the back siphon overflows. Reef ready generally means an internal overflow with drilled tank bottom (e.g., the Megaflows).

The HOB siphons do allow for more room in the tank and some work very well, but also add a box with tubing onto the back of you tank. So it kind of depends on where the tank will be and how visible the back of the tank will be. I prefer a cleaner look to the outside of the tank. If you need more in-tank room, buy a bigger tank, is my current philosophy.

How would the holes be drilled? They would have to be at the top in which case you would just run a hose from the bulkhead. The only reason you would have a box on the back is for a siphon. Maybe someone can chime in on this who knows how this would work.

I was thinking that the water overflowed over the existing edge into another box on the back that was drilled.

I am pretty sure I have this. I did a search and couldn't find it though.

I see! The tank is notched at the top. Very interesting and probably expensive.

You have to have them custom done. I know Miracles in a Glass, Envision Acrylics, & Aquarium Obssesed to name a few.
