Are UV Sterlizers bad for a reef tank?

I have a 9 watt Twisted Turbo UV sterlizer on my 55. Are they bad for reef tanks? I kind of bought it just to have it figured it couldn't hurt. Lately I've been wondering if it is sucking too many nutrients out of the water. Anyone have any opinions on this?

I run a 25W UV on my 135. No problems with it here.
