i'm looking into getting a ro/di unit for my 55. what do i need? any brand names? flow rates? anything else i need to know. I know nothing about these things. do i really need one?

There are about a million posts on this subject on RC. If you do a quick search you wil have more than enough reading for weeks on end. I would have to say by far the most popular unit is the Typhoon III from www.airwaterice.com . There are systems that are just as good from others vendors such as www.buckeyefieldsupply.com , www.purelyh2o.com , www.thewaterguys.biz and www.melevsreef.com .
All use name brand high quality components and are built and backed by people who really have an interest in the reef hobby and not just out to make a buck. |

Regarding flow rates, the 75 gpd Dow Filmtec membrane has excellent rejection characteristics and is what you should look for.
Regarding really needing RO/DI or not, it is mainly useful, IMO for keeping things like phosphates out of the water that goes into your tank. It helps keep algae in check and is a foundation for an environment that is conducive to good coral growth, etc. It is not absolutely required for keeping a SW tank, but it is useful. Jack
