bio-wheels

I was just wondering if bio-wheels are any good. I have two on my newly set up 38 gal. fish only. I have a rena xp2 canister and a css65 skimmer coming in the mail. I don't have any live rock. Is this setup any good. If not what would you recommend. I would like to keep the canister. What could I do for biological besides live rock. thanks.
