what filter? do you have a mechanical filter in the sump, or do you have LR\W algal turf scrubber?

What you are trying to keep and how big is your sump?
Is this on the 180? What type of skimmer are you going to run?

4-5X of tank volume running through your sump is fine, IMO. Ideally, you want all your surface skimmed water to enter your skimmer, so I like to have the GPH entering my sump to be less than the GPH being taken in by the skimmer. This way, all the surface skimmed water, along with some extra from the sump, gets pulled into the skimmer. I have found skimmer production to increase greatly with this method.

i agree...3-5x, in order to give skimmer optimal chance to clean the water.
Get your flow from C.L., Tunze's, or the like. -JMO

If it were my tank I would run about 1200gph through your sump. The most that your two overflows(I am assuming you have two overflows) can handle. That is assuming your sump is a 30 gallon or larger with baffles. IMO running more water through the sumps helps with aeration, increased contact time with media(carbon, puragen etc...) etc...... but that's just my opinion
Chris

it definitely helps with aeration, but how is there more contact time if water is rushing past the media?

I agree with SD guy. Let the skimmer do the work for your system.

At any rate there is nothing wrong with 4 or 5 times an hour and it really depends on what you are trying to do with the tank as to how much flow you want through the sump. I was just stating what I would do Chris

I think chrismunn was talking about total tank movement for a sps tank. A mag drive 1800 is a nice quiet pump for a tank like this and for the closed loop tunze or dart for plumbed tank.
