Zero Waste Reverse Osmosis ??
Hi,
I am just starting out with my reef and have found a great deal of helpful information for the newbie in this forum. I am wondering if anyone has tried out this Zero Waste RO unit. Is it suited for use in reef tanks? I want to use RO water, but have been told that alot of the water gets wasted. I believe this unit feeds the waste water into your hot water system for reuse. Like you said, a zero waste system merely pumps the waste water back into your system. This is usually done with a booster pump because it must be forced back into the line with more pressure than the line has. The quality of the water would be no different that a regular RO system so it should be fine for reef use. The system is usually pretty expensive and ROI takes awhile. You might consider other options like saving the waste water for watering plants or the lawn or even a suds saver and use it for washing clothes.

Fishneck i have ordered the Zero Waste Retrofit Kit to add to my RO unit as my unit is slow with lots of waste due to cold water(wisconsin winters) and a tds of 385. I will have to let you know how it works. I will let you know how it affects the performance of the RO but will not be able to see cost savings until the quarter is over for my water bill. I spent like $80 filling my 125. Rediculous. I bought the retrofit brand new for $93 off ebay. I just hope i dont end up with a busted pipe or something. That would suck. I'm still trying to figure out where the waste water goes. I know it goes back into the water supply but there is only so much room in the home's piping system. Anyone wanna try and figure that out? I cant see them selling a system that would wreck someones plumbing. I'll be getting the unit over the next couple of days.

As far as I know, as you said, it pumps the waste stream to the hot water heater.

Its actually on the exit side of the hot water heater. I've emailed the company with some specific questions.

I was doing some testing with my new RO/DI unit and the TDS meter. I wouldn't want the waste back in my system. I'll collect some and use for clean and watering etc.
Tap = 190 ppm Filtered fridge water = 156 ppm RO = 9 ppm RO/DI = o ppm waste from RO/DI = 347 ppm Drew |
