A kalkwasser reactor has lime in it and mixes with water whilst a calcium reactor uses carbon dioxide to drop the pH of the reactor water, dissolving reactor media.
Limewater is usually used to top off evaporated water. It is excellent for maintaining calcium, alkalinity, and pH. It will only do this to a certain extent. Folks with lots of SPS corals will use a calcium reactor as it is a much better tool for adding large quantities of calcium. FYI, "Kalk" is the German word for lime and is not calcium. Oh, welcome to the site!! I went to Barry Goldwater High School!!

Hi Phxocean
![]() To Reef Central Of the two the KW topoff system is by far the cheapest and easiest to maintain. However, since most nurses are accustomed to handling gas cylinders and related equipment the cost issue is probably the more important. As the old salt said, for folks with lots stoney corals the need for the more elaborate reactor is more likely. Ahh, Kalzium oxid, wundervolles material. ![]()
