Heat in sand bed

Has any one used substrate heating on there sand bed?

i've heard of it used in planted tanks, that have a deep substrates in order to make convection currents in the soil/water to help with rooted plants etc and aiding to the biological cycling process.

no idea about saltwater.

my heater lays on a little bed of sand in my sump. Don't know if that does anything
