Acro Skinned!@#$%

SKIN OF PURPLE ACRO DISINTERGRATED, NOW ONLY LIME GREEN SKELETON--IS IT DEAD--BOUGHT A NICE FRAG PURPLE ACRO ON SUNDAY--NOW THE SKIN IS GONE WHAT HAPPENED? WHEN I BOUGHT IT, THE SELLER JUST GRABBED IT FROM THE TANK AND PUT IT IN THE BAD--I ACCLIMATED IN THE BAG--AND DROPPED IT IN-THINKING IT WAS HARDY--BUYER LIVED LIKE 20 MINS FROM ME--MY TEMP WAS FINE--80 AND LIGHTS VHO--ANY IDEAS--300 WATTS OF VHO SHOULD BE OK FOR ACROS--RIGHT

you'll get a better response without all caps and using a spell checker.

once RTN sets in the corals a total loss. prevention and rapid care after first signs is only way to care for this.

Sorry about the previous post. Typing frantically. What is RTN; could I have prevented same? The Mother this was allegedly cut from was doing so well it had some parts exposed outside the water. This Seller had a steller set up--I took it for granted that I had to acclimate same a little more. In any event--are 300 watts of VHo enough for acros?

rapid tissue necrosis. to try to save the coral you cut off what's not been affected and HOPE they don't rtn. a full size coral can be gone in a few hours or less.

there's alot of debate on lighting and acro's cover a very wide range. some acro's you could probably keep and some definetly not..

what size tank?

Sorry for your loss.

If you could figure out exactly what causes many acros to RTN, you'd be a very wealthy man!

truth is, it could be any one of a million reasons: differences in temp, ph, changes in light, too much acclimation time, not enough acclimation time, touching with bare hands, etc., etc., etc.... acros are fickle creatures. it's enough of a reason for some of us not to keep them any more :P

i would not blame the handleing from the LFS completely. personally i remove my acros from the water all the time with no harm done. the question is how old is your tank? is this your first sps? sps corals are advanced corals compared to softies. they need prestine water conditions and perfect ph/calcium/kh/etc levels. if your ph is off or something like that when you add an sps it will immediately degrade till death. sounds like you should improve filtration and stabalize you hardness before venturing into sps again.

thanks for your response, don't get me wrong--I am not blaming the seller at all-he was the hilt of professional--i just took his lead seeing he was so cavelier with the frag i was too--i agree before I venture with another frag i should have all my requirements in check--with xenia, zoos and leathers you can pretty much eye ball it --it appears with sps it is a more exact sciend--however my monti is doing well--interesting huh?

well acro is one of the harder sps to care for. There alot of things that could have went wrong. Such as acclimation time and procedure. Placement in the tank. Enough flow. The list can keep going for sps corals. What vhos are you running. If they are actinics, they wont help the acro for lighting. Their mainly for accent colors.
