Before, during or After?
This will be my first tank that I am going to put Chaeto in the sump area. This new sytem is still doing its cycling, Do I wait till the cycle is complete to add Chaeto to the sump, or can I add it while I am still in my spikes? Next, Do I have to have fish in the display tank before the Chaeto, or can it still be empty and have the Chaeto below?

Also, is $18.00 for 1/2 pound of Chaeto a good price?

half pound?
thats alot i got a bagfull, like the ones you get fish in, for free fro ma local reefer, it was barely any weight, a half pound will go a long way, so it sounds good to me, this is just my 2 cents though, im not to keen on cheato |

I like chaeto just fine. I picked up a double fistfull for $6 at the LFS. Any amount should be fine to start out, it will grow and you'll be harvesting before you know it. Throw it in at any point as long as the water isn't terribly toxic from cycling.
I've noticed a steep drop in the algae accumulation on my glass since I added it.

Well I have seen quart size bags for $9.00 and Softball size clumps for $15.00. I would guess that a quart size bag would hold a softball size clump and weigh about 6 oz's? Yes, No?
