I am looking for some help on figuring out the right size sump and pump for my 58 gallon rr tank.
I was looking at the Precision Marine R24 or R30 online. But the R30 has two bulkheads. Can I run using only one, due to only having one overflow on the Oceanic 58? If someone has a better suggestion as to brand or type other then Precision Marine I am open for suggestions. I would like to buy one from a store in the DC Metro area. And not interested in building one, I do not have the time. I believe there is a one inch bulkhead on the tank, and it is rated at 800 gallons per hour max. (According to LFS from which it is being purchased) Being that this is my first tank with a filtration system like this I am looking for suggestions as to what brand of pump I should purchase, and the amount of flow it should have. I would like something that is not too noisy and think I would prefer submerged so there is not too much plumbing to deal with. This tank will have to be relocated in a year. I was also wondering if it is overkill to use my old lighting system from my 20 gallon reef setup for this refugium/sump. It consists of two 55watt power compacts. 10k and atanic bulbs. Is it better to run 10k or atanic for sump/refugiums? Any help or suggestions are appreciated. Do not want to go down the wrong path. Tim |

I would get the biggest sump that you can fit in the stand.
Currently I have a 58 oceanic rr and am using a 30 x 16 sump, and have a seperate 30 gallon tank converted to a refugium. I use external pumps to try and limit the heat issues though. HTH |

Here is a link to a thread where I documented the rebuild of my Oceanic 58RR.
http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh...allon+redesign As far as sump size, skimmer choice, lighting, plumbing configuration ... have you decided what you want to keep? Believe it or not the choice of what you want to keep will affect the equipment you purchase.

Thanks for replying and showing me your setup reef_dude76! Looks great!
Do not plan on running anything too tough to keep. Just transferring the stuff in my 20 gallon over to it and will add some more of the same of course. Currently I have fish wise 1 Lemon Peel Angel 2 Bangi Cardinals 2 Chromis Damsels Clean up crew of small crabs and snails For corals 2 different mushrooms 2 different polyps 1 leather coral 1 small clam Not really planning on anything more difficult then that to keep…. My current tank has been up for over 5 years and had the lemon peel the entire time ![]() My lighting for the new tank is 150HQI w/two 96watt pc (Current USA fixture) And will be replacing my sea clone skimmer. This has worked great for me in my 20 gallon for a long time. But will not cut it in the new tank. |

Well here are a few things to keep in mind.
1. Submersable sump pumps will add heat to your system. This may or may not be a big deal if you plan for it. 2. Submersable pumps can sometimes leak stray voltage into the system. 3. Buy a skimmer that is rated for twice the size of your system or cut the rating of what ever skimmer you are looking at in half. Skimmers tend to be overrated as the the size of the system they can actually handle ... IME 4. Consider hard plumbing with an external pump. Less heat transfer. 5. Consder installing a Durso drain if you want a quiter system in regards to water flow.
