DT's "Best if used by date"

I was at the LFS looking in the fridge at the DT's and notice they where all expired when i shut the door the owner told me i could have one and he found one that the best if used by date was March 15 06 and gave it to me this is the BIG bottle like $42 and it was free. I was wondering about culturing my own phyto if it is possible to use this for that or in my tank, it actually smells pretty good, it smells better than my current bottle that has 7 months left on it. What would you guys do with this giant bottle of free DT's that expired 2 weeks ago?

I'm not totally sure, but I believe that these bottles are still good even after the "best if used by" date on the bottle. I had a bottle of DT's that I was still using a month after that date, because it still smelled just like it did the day I opened it.

You should be OK to use it as long as it smells OK.

I read the DT's pamphlet this evening and if I remember correctly it said that it should last 6 months, but the date on the bottle is listed at only 5 months. You have one extra month to use the product.

DT's shelf life

I would like to clarify what my Best If Used By date is based on. The shelf life of DT’s live phytoplankton is based on the feeding trials that Rob Toonen conducted on a variety of invertebrate larvae that was published in 2002. There was a drop off at 6 months that indicated that the effectiveness as a food was diminished to the extent that I established the shelf life at 5 months from harvest. We change the date twice a month at the 1st and the 15th. Phytoplankton that is harvested from the 1st to the 15th is dated to be used by the 1st of the 5th month from harvest. Phytoplankton that is harvested from the 16th to the end of the month is dated to be used by the 15th of the 5th month. Much of the phytoplankton is still alive after the shelf life but the nutritional value is greatly diminished. Although you can grow a phytoplankton culture from my product, it will not grow as well as a mono-culture. For more storage information: http://www.dtplankton.com/phytoplankton/storage.html

As long as it doesn't taste like asparagus then I use it.
