You do need some kind of fillter wether it be alot of sand and rock or a sump with a refugium, wet dry . or canister,ect. but you need both IMO

All I have on my 30g is approx 60lbs live rock and a big honkin skimmer! ASM G2! DO NOT SKIMP on the skimmer, it is by far the most important part if removing wast from tank!

If you are going to use live rock and/or sand and you have a good skimmer no other filter is required.

currently the most "popular" way of mechanical filtration is using a filter sock to filter out the larger particles in the water column, then using a skimmer to knock out the smaller stuff left from the sock.-Best for Reefs currently in most peoples opinion

For a Fish Only System or a lightly stocked reef, the "older" technology of Wet/Dry systems and Canisters will be just fine. Most are under the agreement now, that the canisters may add to nitrates. It is noted though that some still use it and have great results.

The opinion on not using these methods now may be simply a preference or taking a potential problem out of the equation.

Yes, somekind of mechanical filtration BEFORE a skimmer is needed. The choice is yours.

well im getting a skimmer to lower nitrates. and i thought that the filter would help to. also what is a filter sock.

I've had a skimmer & filter and now am removing the filter after realizing the filter is probably not necessary and is most likely filtering copepods/ ampipods that my mandarin eats.

I still run a canister filter ... it's mostly full of live rock rubble, and often a chemipure or polyfilter.

I believe that you'd use a filter sock over the intake of a sump. Same as using a filter pad in a hang on filter.

Personally, I think filters are good things when used correctly. They help increase water flow, are great for running carbon or other media, and can be used with filter pads for short durations to polish your water. If your HOB filter is large enough, you can even tuck a small heater inside.
